Parish Life and Worship

- ALTAR SERVERS assist the priest in celebrating the Mass. Should be in 5th grade or higher.
- CHILDREN'S LITURGY of the Word is offered at the 9 and 11:30 a.m. Masses on the second and fourth Sundays of each month
- EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS assist in distributing the Eucharist at masses and communion services.
- LECTORS proclaim the word of the Lord at daily and Sunday Masses.
- LITURGY COORDINATOR arranges liturgical and sacramental rites and celebrations and other services with appropriate environment, art and music.
- MUSIC MINISTRY leads the sung prayer of the church at worship.
- USHERS greet parishioners and visitors as they arrive for Sunday Mass, help with seating, take up the collections, and distribute Sunday bulletins.
Parish Socials Committee plans parish picnic, pancake supper as well as informal social gatherings for our parishioners throughout the year. - Contact Debbie Langdon at 301-262-3644.

Youth Activities
Youth Group is a growing association of high school students on a journey of faith with good works and social activities along the way. Adult Faith Formation
"We, as the Catholic bishops of the United States, call the Church in our country to a renewed commitment to adult faith formation, positioning it at the heart of our catechetical vision and practice. We pledge to support adult faith formation without weakening our commitment to our other essential educational ministries. " (Hearts Were Burning Within Us,no. 6)
"Let us…help the adults in our communities be touched and transformed by the life-giving message of Jesus, to explore its meaning, experience its power, and live in its light as faithful adult disciples today." (OHWB, no. 183)

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process for those who are interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith, or in becoming Catholic. We welcome anyone who wishes to join us. We are also always interested in parishioners who would like to be sponsors, Catechists or offer hospitality to this group. For more information look under Sacraments.
Homecoming is a program for anyone who has recently returned to the Church or who is thinking about returning . Homecoming meets every week over a period of several months, breaks and then starts up again. Homecoming runs year round for anyone seeking this service. Each week we address a different topic based on the expressed need of the participants. If you are interested please contact Sr. Marty Gentilini SSJ at ex 12.
BIBLE Study is a program where small groups of parishioners meet in the home of one to study a particular book of the Bible and discuss its impact on their lives. The study begins with a presentation by a scripture scholar. We use the Little Rock Scripture Series for our text. Registration for this study in held in September.
Moments for Moms is for mothers of small children . Mothers bring their children mingle with other mothers, learning more about their faith and sharing ideas of how to integrate it into family life. Moments for Moms meets on Wednesday mornings in the Fall and again in January for an 8 week stretch. Call Sr. Marty Gentilini SSJ for more information ex 12.
Men of St. Pius Community This new group focuses on the Sunday Readings and topics as they relate to men of all ages, single, married. The Meetings are set for the first and third Wednesday of the month at 7:30-8:30pm in the convent meeting room.
Adult Education is an important part of our ongoing development in a rapidly changing world. Our adult lives depend upon being informed and motivated Catholics. The parish bulletin carries the details of Adult Education opportunities as they occur during the year.
A Parish Retreat Morning and/or Evening is offered several times during the year. These opportunities are offered to give our parishioners a valuable experience of spiritual enrichment, community and prayer.
Parish Library located next to the church has a small collection of audio and videos tapes and a collection of theological and spiritual reading for circulation.
Sodality is a faith-centered group committed to apostolic service within and beyond the parish community with the Blessed Virgin Mary as inspiration. For more information call Lorraine Nosacek 301-262-5755.

Caring Ministry to the Sick, Dying and Bereaved
This offers spiritual, physical and psychological support to those who are chronically ill, to caregivers and to those who lose loved ones in death.
The goal is to bring them the healing comfort of God through practical assistance and the continuing prayers by the St. Pius X Faith Community. For more information, contact Cindy Christian at 301-262-2141 ext 27.
- We visit the sick of the parish.
- We bring the Holy Eucharist to the sick, aged and housebound.
- We notify Father Jones about those who should be anointed.
- We ascertain the needs of the sick and identify resources to meet them.
- We assist the bereaved by helping them to plan the funeral liturgy and by lending support at the viewing and at the funeral.
Other Support:
- An annual anointing mass for the sick
- Periodic retreats for the bereaved
- Occasional education seminars
- Bereavement support groups for the bereaved
- Remembrance on special holidays.

Shawl Ministry
This group knits and crochets shawls for the sick and shut-ins. They meet the 2nd and 4th Thursday after the 9:00am Mass in the rectory.

Outreach and Social Concerns
St. Vincent DePaul Society (St. Pius X Conference): Performs works of charity such as distribution of food, clothing, furniture and money to the needy. A number of other charitable groups are affiliated with this conference, but are independent ministries. For more information on any of these, call the Rectory at 301-262-2141 x10.
- Prison Ministry makes regular monthly visits to a prison, and provides personal spiritual care through bible study and group prayer.
- Sharing Pantry stores and distributes food parcels and food coupons to the needy in our community, as well as to Assumption Parish in the District, on an ongoing basis.
- S.O.M.E. Once a month a small group of parishioners brings a nourishing, ample breakfast to the S.O.M.E. District Facility, and serves it to 300 men, women, and children.
- Adult Mission GroupGroup of adults 18+ makes annual week long trip to help communities in need.

- Advent Giving Tree collects gifts for children and adults at our brother-sister Parish, Assumption.
- Helping Hands is our parish effort to provide temporary help to parishioners with short-term unexpected needs. Call Maureen Mulroy 301-262-2961.
- Thanksgiving Baskets provide the groceries for a Thanksgiving dinner to local families as well as to Assumption Parish.
- Warm Nights participates on a rotating basis with other local churches providing the homeless with meals and a warm place to sleep.

- Legislative Network gives parishioners an opportunity to act on Catholic values through lobbying efforts on the local, state, and national levels.
- Right to Life promotes efforts on behalf of human life and love through advocacy, education, direct assistance and spiritual support.
The parish also provides financial and individual assistance to Bowie Crisis Pregnancy Center (counsels and assists pregnant women in making pro-life Choices, the Gabriel House (assisting single mothers through birth and early care of infants); and, on an annual, selected, basis, financial and spiritual support to Catholic Churches in different places throughout the country and the world.

Education/Child Formation

Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC) is the process through which non-Catholics learn about the Catholic faith and explore becoming fully initiated members of the church. Contact Sister Marty Gentilini, SSJ, 301-262-2141, Ext. 12.
St. Pius X Regional School provides instruction for children in grades k-8 from the parishes of St. Pius X, Sacred Heart, St. Edward's and Ascension. - contact Robert S. Love, Principal, 301-262-0203
